Meet the Owners: Vernon and Jill

In 1970 my Dad and I decided to try out commercial fishing in SE Alaska. We bought a fish camp on the Dohme River. Besides the commercial fishing right, the camp came with a guiding and outfitting permit from the Forest Service, who at that time controlled the land uses in the area.

When the time came that we were ready to build our camp, a site became available on the East Alsek River, so we decided to have our permits moved to that location.

Back then getting building materials was very difficult and you had to be very creative. We started by using materials from the site on the Dohme, and lumber we made from trees we felled and then milled into boards with an Alaskan chain saw mill, which took about twenty minutes to make each 8-ft board.

Things became easier after a boat called the Keijack ran aground on our beach on April 27th, 1971. When we heard about this we flew up and got the salvage rights to the Keijack, which included over $10,000 worth of lumber. My favorite thing we salvaged was the Kiejack’s steering wheel, which we turned into the chandelier that hangs in our entry living room. Over the past 57 years we have continued to build and improve our lodge, though today getting materials is much easier.

In 1980 the Park Service took over the area we are in from the Forest Service, making the area part of the Glacier Bay Park and Preserve. We are in the Preserve part of the park, and now operate with with a concession permit issued to us by the Park Service. Because we are in the preserve we are one of the only three historic lodges able to operate as a concession in the Preserve.

This is privilege we have enjoyed for 57 years now, being able to share the beauty and wonder of this pristine wilderness area with many hundreds of fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts. We have a 95% return rate and quite a few families who are 3rd generation visitors. We hope you will come and enjoy our beautiful area and become part of the Northern Lights Haven Lodge family.

Testimonials

“I went to Vern’s in 2014 for a ‘Once in a lifetime’ fly fishin’ trip to Alaska…and I’ve been back six more times!!

The fishing, hospitality, food, scenery, and wildlife is over the top. Catching silvers while watching bears catch theirs in the shallows, having a young bald eagle attack one of our duck decoys, and seeing a giant bull moose cross the river nearby is a true Alaskan experience. Vern knows what he is doing and is a great host, and now a great friend.”

— Marty G.

“I’ve been going to North Lights Haven Lodge in Yakutat, Alaska at least 7 times over the last 26 years and have brought many friends with me. Silver salmon are my favorite ones to catch, but I did catch all five salmon species in one week several years ago — a record at Vern’s lodge that I believe still stands!

His guides have always been top notch and make sure you catch your limit. The meals are unbelievable and you always go home with a few extra pounds!

I love seeing eagles, bears, and moose every time I’ve been there. You can’t beat the value for what you get here anywhere in Alaska.

— Charlie B.

I have been going to Northern Lights Haven for about 25 years, which shows how much I appreciate the lodge and people there. The location is pristine and off the beaten path, you hardly see any other folks than those at the lodge, almost like having a national park to yourself.

Beautiful views, wildlife, and great fishing are what you’ll get, as well as great food, and people who know how to take care of you.

Other members of my family went for the first time several years ago and they’re returning with me again this year, there must be a reason! A truly unique experience.

— Bill S.

“My first year at the lodge was in 2014, and I’ve been returning ever since. Northern Lights is truly a hidden gem of Alaska. The food is outstanding, and the guides are talented and personable, and the fishing is exceptional. On top of that, the views of Mount Fairweather and the surrounding glaciers are absolutely breathtaking.

The team goes out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, and their attention to detail ensures a great experience for all. I will continue to spend time at the lodge for as long as I am able.”

— Mike D.

The best trip I ever had to Vern’s Northern Lights Lodge, over 19 years. Everything was great , guides, food and service. Highly recommend it to everyone. 👍👍
